Ingrown Toenail Treatment Canberra & Tuggeranong

TAKE YOUR FIRST STEP TO FIX YOUR INGROWN NAILS

Ingrown toenails are a common, painful condition, where the edges or corners of your nails grow into the skin next to the nail. If your nail breaks the skin, your toe can become infected and very painful.

If your condition becomes chronic – which means that your ingrown nail keeps recurring – Capital Podiatry can perform a simple, routine operation in the clinic.

The risk of complications is higher if you have diabetes or other conditions that cause poor circulation.

Onyfix nail correction helps your nails grow straight

Onyfix is a toenail correction system that helps your nail grow straight and strong. It is essentially a non-invasive strip that is cured to the nail using an LED blue light on your nail. It’s really useful for people with weak nails that buckle at the sides and grow into the skin. Onyfix provides the structure to let your nail grow straight. Once your nail has been trained to grow straight, you will no longer need Onyfix.

Onyfix is a versatile and innovative product that enables completely painless treatment of almost all forms of ingrown toenail conditions and can also help prevent your nail from cracking and splitting. Clinically, Onyfix has also been shown to prevent fungal nails starting on the tips of the nails from spreading down the nail. This can work in conjunction with our lunula laser therapy, assisting healthy nails to grow out more effectively after treatment.
Your podiatrist attaches a strip of Onyfix to your nail after it has been cleaned and cleared of infection. The whole process is pain-free during application and throughout the entire treatment. Your podiatrist will then monitor the Onyfix as your nail grows out.

Booking you in for nail surgery

You know when you have an ingrown nail – it’s painful and it can get to the stage where you can’t wear some of your shoes.

Nail surgery:

  • We will ask you a range of screening questions to see if you have chronic ingrown toenail/s.
  • If this is the case, we will book you in for nail surgery, which is a routine operation done under local anaesthetic in the clinic.
  • The surgery takes about 45 minutes for one toe and about an hour for two toes.
  • We see you back for two dressing checks after your surgery.
  • Our patients report that they feel little post-surgery pain.

SYMPTOMS

  • Skin next to the nail becomes tender, swollen, or hard
  • Pain when there is pressure on the toe
  • Fluid building up around the toe

However if your toe becomes infected, symptoms may include:

  • Red, swollen, painful skin
  • Bleeding
  • Oozing pus
  • Overgrowth of skin around the toe

COMMON CAUSES

  • Fungal nail infections: which can change the shape of your nails and make them thicker.
  • Genetics: you may have inherited the family trait to develop ingrown toenails.
  • Trauma: you may develop ingrown toenails after stubbing your toe or dropping a heavy object onto your toe.
  • Tight fitting shoes: this pressure can develop into ingrown toenails
  • Cutting your nails incorrectly: if you cut too far down the side of your nails when you’re trimming this can develop into ingrown nails. This also happens if you leave a spike at the side of your nail.
  • Chronic illness: this can affect the nail bed and impact the normal growth of your nail. Your nail may develop ridges and its shape may change, which can develop into ingrown toenails.
